Hey, peoples. I thought that our poll for the next week could focus on an incident that occured at one of our secondary schools yesterday. The backstory is that Principal of the Garrison Secondary School, Matthew Farley, suspended about 200 students because their clothing was deemed inappropriate. Those suspended were third to fifth form girls who had not complied with the school's deportment rules. You can read the full story here.

In terms of the videos, over the next few weeks we're going to be alternating between music videos from the soulful Alicia Keys and queen of hip-hop soul, Mary J. Blige. 59th Emmy Awards
The stars were out in their glory last night at the 59th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards in Los Angeles. As expected, it was a big night for The Sopranos, which won the Best Drama award. My girl America Ferrera won best actress in a comedy series for her role as Betty Suarez in Ugly Betty.
And the groundbreaking miniseries Roots, which chronicled the history of a black American family, was saluted as it celebrated its 30th anniversary. Roots star John Amos (Who can forget his line "My name is Kunta Kinte!") and other cast members were treated to a standing ovation.

Eric Jerome Dickey's coming this week!
Who says lightning doesn't strike in the same place twice. One of my favourite authors, Eric Jerome Dickey, will be visiting Barbados a second time, this time to promote his new novel, Waking with Enemies. I've been reading his books since before he grew dreadlocks and I'm sure his new novel will be a hit.
Eric will be autographing his new book exclusively at Pages Bookstores all this week, and on Friday will be doing a special island tour for ten lucky fans. The idea is that he will then use his experiences here to write a novel featuring Barbados, its people and its culture.
Well it's about time folks realised we have tons of material for stories here in Bim. I would have preferred if a book by a native on contemporary Barbados blew up first, but hopefully the interest his future project will no doubt generate will open doors for writers like myself. I hope to attend one of the book signings tomorrow and take some pics, so watch out for more.

A new round of Cheese
Hi peoples! I'm back with you after a short break. Thanks for all your coments; I had fun reading through them. The break from regular blogging also gave me a chance to do some housekeeping; I've added links to the last story, Ghetto Fabulous, in the sidebar, as well as to dreadlocs' Oh No They Didn't!!! segment. Blogs Ya Herrd, Fashion Over Style and Doan Mind Me have also been added to the link list.
A lot sure has happened in the last two weeks. First of all, let me congratulate Orette Bruce Golding on becoming Jamaica's eighth Prime Minister. I know my former landlady in Jamdown must be thrilled. US President George W. Bush sent his best wishes as well.
Golding is proof that perseverance pays off. Never mind that dark NDM chapter, Bruce, you won out in the win. Just don't go waving around any
abengs and you'll be alright.

On a sad note, I would like to bid farewell to classical opera powerhouse, Luciano Pavarotti. According to a relative who works at a west coast hotel, Pavarotti was a regular visitor to Barbados and he enjoyed cooking up his own pasta dishes on the balcony of his room. As one third of the famous Three Tenors, his inimitable stylings will be greatly missed.
On a happier note, kudos to the local media for conceptualising the Brittons Hill Appeal telethon, which aired on September 8th. To all those who pledged funds, please honour the pledges!

Condolences to St. Lucia
Cheese-on-bread extends its condolences to the Government and people of St. Lucia on the passing of their Father of Independence, Sir John George Melvin Compton. Sir John was one of the region's great political stalwarts, and will be greatly missed. His funeral has been set for Saturday, September 22.
Former parliamentarian Stephenson King, who acted as Prime Minister since April after Sir John fell ill, was officially sworn in as Prime Minister yesterday.
Good luck, PM King. I think you're going to need it....
Rihanna wins at VMAs
Hey peoples, just sneaking in a few posts while on break. Well, you Cheese-on-Bread voters can cut cards, as my granny would say. As you predicted, Rih-Rih won Video of the Year for Umbrella at last night's MTV Video Music Awards in Las Vegas. She also copped the Monster Single of the Year for, you guessed it, Umbrella. Here's a summary of some of Ms. Rihanna's Las Vegas activites in pictures and video.
No awards show is worth its salt these days without having other glitzy affairs leading up to it, and the MTV VMAs were no different. One such event was the Samsung Gleam Private Dinner and After Party at Tao, where Rihanna dined with (l-r) Kidada Jones (Quincy Jones' daughter, and mega producers Jermaine Dupri, Quincy Jones and Pharrel Williams. Hmm, I sense some future collaborations here...
Last night at the VMAs, Rihanna looked resplendent in rose-pink, and was easily one of the best dressed women on the red carpet.
Later during the show, she performed Umbrella with Chris Brown. I was disappointed they didn't sing more of the song though. Gotta hand it to Chris Brown, though. He's one talented 18 year old.

And what's a big night without the support of friends, right? They could pass for sisters....
